It has created diverse macrame pieces, including wall hangings, plant hangers, and fashion accessories. Macrame is now a versatile and captivating art form.

Macrame Coaster Pattern for Beginners

Keychain patterns are usually my go-to projects for macrame beginners.

However, coaster patterns are not far-behind as my next favorite option. Like keychains, coasters are small projects that don’t take a lot of time to make and require minimal cord to work with. 

To create unique textures and visual interest, you can experiment with various knot combinations, such as square knots, alternating square knots, half hitch knots, or spiral knots. Adding decorative elements like beads or fringe can further enhance the coaster's aesthetic appeal.

Personally, I am obsessed with functional macrame, where function meets art, and this pattern is no exception.

Macrame Knots You Need to Know

Getting familiar with macrame knots is essential for mastering the art of Macrame. For this project, you will need to know the following knots:

• Lark's head knot
• Double half-hitch knot
• Square knot

The above knots happen to be the 3 basic knots of macrame.

By learning popular knots like the square knot, lark's head knot, and double half-hitch knot, you'll have a solid foundation for creating a wide range of macrame projects, including coasters.

The Lark's Head knot serves as a fundamental mounting knot for various projects.

As a mounting knot, it provides a reliable and secure attachment point for your macrame design to a dowel, ring, or other supporting structure. 

This knot allows you to easily hang cords onto your macrame creation, providing a stable foundation for further knotting and design elements.

The double half hitch knot is a fundamental and highly versatile knot in macrame. It serves as the building block for many intricate knot patterns, making it an essential technique for creating beautiful macrame designs.

A square knot is a common macrame knot formed by alternately crossing two cords over each other. It holds a significant role in macrame as the key decorative knot.

It serves as the foundation for numerous patterns and designs, both on its own and in combination with other types of knots.

In this pattern, I have incorporated a fun variation of the square knot – the S-Square knot. It's a regular square knot with another half knot added in the design. It looks gorgeous and adds uniqueness to the design.

DIY Macrame Coaster Cord & Materials

You'll need a few essential materials and supplies when creating this macrame coaster pattern.

For this pattern, you will need 3mm macrame cord and a wooden dowel to help you make the coaster. The dowel will not form a part of the coaster once it is completed.

Choosing Macrame Cord

The most crucial material is the cord. Macrame cord can be made from various materials such as cotton, jute, or nylon, each offering a different texture and appearance. 

Choosing a cord that is soft, sturdy and suitable for your desired coaster design is essential, ensuring durability and functionality.

We’re using 3mm single strand Rainbow cord for this pattern.

• Our Rainbow cord line is certified 100% chemical free and eco-friendly as it is made from recycled cotton materials.
• The single strand type of cord in particular comes in a wide variety of colors.
• We love it because it’s smooth, soft, and sturdy, making it easy to work with.

If you can’t get your hands on our single strand Rainbow cotton cord, try substituting with our 3-ply Rainbow cotton cord, which will also work well for this pattern and offer a more textured aesthetic.

Other supplies

Other than a wooden dowel or a stick to mount the cords onto, to make the pattern, other supplies are not needed.

Essential tools

You will also need some essential tools:

• Measuring tape
• Scissors
• Tape
• Fringe comb

Macrame Coaster Pattern Details

Skill Level

• 10 cm (4”) width x 12 cm (4.75”) height

Materials Needed (for 1 unit)

• ~11 meters (430”) of 3mm Macrame Cord
• 10”- 12” Wooden dowel/stick/ (used to assist in making the pattern)

Cord Lengths Needed

• 10 x 110 cm (43")

** Note: The cord lengths suggested here are based off of the pattern using 3mm single strand Rainbow Cord. Should you use a different size cord or cord from a different brand, actual cord lengths may differ slightly and therefore should be adjusted for accordingly.

Completion time

This project should take approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. Depending on your skill level, the actual time can vary.

Important Macrame Terms for Beginners

Here are some helpful macrame terms you should know when following this pattern:

1. Knots:  Macrame involves various types of knots, such as the square knot, double half hitch knot, and the Lark's head knot. Understanding these basic knot patterns creates the foundation of macrame. Refer to the "Macrame Knots You Will Need To Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
2. Cords: Cords are the primary material used in macrame. They are made of different materials like cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. Macrame cords come in various thicknesses and colors.
3. Fringe: Fringe refers to the loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element to beginner projects. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to a desired length.
4. Anchor cord: This refers to the fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached or knotted, providing stability and support to the design.
5. Working cord: This is the piece of cord that is actively used to create knots and patterns, manipulated and moved throughout the project to form the desired design.

Macrame Coaster Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions

If you have a clothing rack, you can start by hanging a wooden dowel on the rack using S-hooks. 

If you don't have a rack, you can secure your wooden dowel to a flat surface like a tabletop using tape, similar to what I did in this tutorial.

Step 1:

• Take all ten strands of cord, each measuring 110 cm in length, and attach them to the dowel using Lark's Head knots.
• Secure the dowel to your workstation using tape to create a stable and reliable base for your work.

 Step 2:

• Leave an inch of space from the top and create a Square knot using the four middle cords.
• Add another half knot, forming an S-shaped Square knot opposite.

 Step 3:

• Continue the pattern diagonally to the left and the right.

• Fill in the middle section with the S-shaped Square knots.

• Create an additional four rows of S-shaped Square knots below, reducing the number of knots by one with each successive row until you reach a single knot in the middle.

• Take the two most extended cords and leave a 3-inch fringe. Afterward, trim off the excess.
• Utilize one of the cords as an anchor for Double Half Hitch knots at the bottom of the diamond.

• Remove the dowel and cut it into the loops' center.

Step 8:

• Take the second cord cut at the bottom, and create another row of Double Half Hitch knots on the opposite side. 

 Step 9:

• Close off with a DHH knot with the anchor cords on both sides. 
• Trim and comb through the fringe.
