Most macramé plant hangers start with a wooden ring. That’s typically the easiest way to get started since you only mount a few cords onto the ring, and there you go.
I decided to change things up a bit and do it without the wooden ring. It requires a few extra steps to make a handle for the plant hangers, but it’s actually super easy.
While this project doesn’t start with a wooden ring, I incorporated a small metal ring in the design to spice things up. This project is great for learning how to incorporate other materials, like rings, into your designs.

This is an awesome beginner project, especially if you want to learn more macramé knots. This plant hanger design uses five different macramé knots: Gathering knot, Double Half Hitch knot, Square knot, Berry knot, and alternating Half Hitch knot.
If you're unfamiliar with these knots, I encourage you to download our 50 knot free eBook to familiarize yourself with these knots, along with other commonly used knots.
This project should take 45-90 minutes, depending on your skill level.
You can find all these cords and supplies in our shop. I used a 4mm Single Strand cotton cord in Coral Rose from our Rainbow range.
Cord Lengths:
1- x 500cm (197”)
1 x 100cm (40”)
1 x 50” (20”)

Step-by-Step Instructions
2-Tier Plant Hanger Pattern
Step #1:
Group 10 x 500 cm cords together, find the middle spot, and then make a large Overhand knot.
Step #2:
Take a 100 cm cord and make a large Gathering knot in the middle of the loop end.
Start a bit farther to the left of the middle loop, and make a loop with one end of the working cord.
Wrap the long end around the gathered cords several times.
Tuck the end through the loop made in the beginning.
Pull on the top end to tighten the knot.
Cut off excess cord at the top and bottom.
Step #3:
To secure the handle, use a 50 cm strand of cord to make a Gathering
knot underneath the knot we have just made.
Step #4:
Take any 4 cords and make a Berry knot with 3 consecutive Square knots. Leave about 1 cm of space before the first Square knot.
Start by making three Square knots.
Loop the middle two anchor cords through the middle hole above the Square knots.
Make a Square knot underneath to seal the Berry knot.
Step #5:
Repeat for 3 more Berry knots.
Step #6:
Make an alternating Square knot in between all Berry knots.
Take two cords from each Berry knot, and one cord from the middle as an anchor cord.
There should be three anchor cords.
Step #7:
Place the macramé through the metal ring and attach all vertical cords onto the ring with Double Half Hitch ("DHH") knots.
Step #8:
Make a Berry knot in between 2 Square knots from above and then repeat the Berry knots all around.
Step #9:
Make a row of alternating Square knots all around.
Step #10:
Add one more row of Alternating Square knots all around.
Step #11:
Work in groups of 2 cords underneath a Square knot to make an alternating Half Hitch chain.
Make a total of 22 alternating Half Hitch knots.
Step #12:
Repeat the pattern underneath the remaining Square knots.
There should be a total of 5 alternating Half Hitch chains.
Step #13:
Take 2 chain patterns beside each other and make a Square knot about 5 cm to 6 cm downwards.
Repeat all around.
Step #14:
Use a 60 cm cord to make a Gathering knot about 8 cm to 9 cm downwards.
Cut off the excess cords.
Step #15:
Repeat the pattern once more with the Alternating Half Hitch chains, Square knots, and Gathering knot underneath.
Step #16:
Trim the fringe to your desired length.
That's the whole pattern! I love how simple it is, but also very effective. The chunky design of these Half Hitch knots is super cool-looking and makes for an interesting project.
