To create this macrame tassel pattern, you will need the following:

How Much Cord do you need for a Macrame Tassel?

This will depend on how big you want your coaster to be. I used about a total of approximately 2 feet (60cm) for the tassel. Below is the cord measurements breakdown.

We carry all the cords and supplies you need to create beautiful macrame.

For this piece, I used a 3mm single-strand twist cord from our Lush Bamboo range for contrast, along with a 3mm metallic cord from our Lush Metallic cord line.

Suggested Cord Lengths:

For this specific tassel, we will be working with the following cord measurements:

  • 10 x 25cm(10")
  •  2 x 35cm(14")

  • 1 x 15cm(6")

Macrame Knots:

  • Overhand Knot

I won't be using any of the basic, commonly-used knots today.

The Lark's head knot, Square Knot, and Double Half Hitch Knot are three popular knots that you will find in all macrame projects!

If unfamiliar with these ties be sure to grab a copy my free 50 Macramé Knots Ebook for an introduction on how they're used as well as some great tying techniques.

Begin Here: Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1:

You will need to separate 10 cords that are each 25 cm long into two groups of five cords each.

Take a 35 cm strand of rope and weave it through the lobster clasp.

Step 2:

Lay the lobster clasp and cord down on top of one group of 25 cm cords.

Place the other group of cords on top.

Step 3:

Take a strand of string that is 15 cm long. Tie a Double Overhand knot in the middle.

Step 4:

With the middle cords attached to the lobster clasp, tie a Double Overhand knot.

Step 5:

Flip the cords down and adjust their lengths so they are the same.

Step 6:

Take the gathered cords and make a Gathering knot with a 35cm cord. Make a loop with the 35cm cord.

Twist the long end of the cord around the tassel a few times.

Tuck the cord end through the loop and pull the top end of the loop tight.

Step 7:

Make sure the cords are adjusted so the tassel is neat.

Cut off the extra rope / cords to your desired length or that are not needed.

You've now made your very own macrame tassel. We hope you enjoyed following along with this tutorial. Be sure to experiment with different cord thicknesses, colors, and sizes to see what you can come up with.

If you're feeling extra adventurous, try making tassels with multiple colors or even add wooden beads or other accessories! Get creative with it!
