Step-by-Step Instructions

The Perfect Fringe

Tip #1: Prep

Prep the fringe by cutting off long strands of excess cord.
Unravel individual cords if you’re using 3-ply cord. It’ll make it a lot easier to brush through later.
If you have a high-quality fringe comb, this step might not be necessary.

Tip #2: Straighten

Straighten out curly or crimped fringe using a steamer.
Steaming the fibers gets rid of curled and crimped spots fairly easily.
Fringe tends to curl quite a lot, especially when you’re using cord scraps that’s been stuffed in a drawer for a long time.
Comb the fringe as you steam, since this ensures that the fringe stays nice and straight.

Tip #3: Comb

Before shaping the fringe, brush and comb it thoroughly.
Start combing right underneath the bottom of the pattern and work your way through to the ends.

Tip #4: Shape

There are many different ways to shape the fringe. You can do it freehand if you want to, or you can use markers.
Use tape as markers to hold down fringe. Shape along the edge of the tape for clean looking fringe.

You can also use the tape to align various sections of fringe. Work on one section at a time, aligning the tape closely with the fringe on the adjoining section.

Tip #5: Spray

To hold the shape of the fringe, use hair spray of fabric stiffener.
As you spray, reshape and rebrush the fringe to make it perfect.
Some hairsprays are more sticky and provide a stronger hold than others.
This is a definite advantage when you’re packing your design to be shipped, since it will reach the destination still looking fresh and fluffy, just the way you like it.
And there you have it, quick and simple tips on creating the prefect macrame fringe.
