Master the Double Half Hitch Knot with This Diamond Keychain Pattern
In this post, we bring functionality and art together in this gorgeously unique diamond keychain design.
Our beginner-friendly diamond keychain pattern uses only two knots: the Double Half Hitch knot and Lark’s Head knot.
These are some of the macramé basics you’ll find in nearly all macramé designs, so it’s the perfect pattern to practice and master these knots with.
Some people find the Double Half Hitch knot a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually quite simple J
The keychain pattern is also super quick to make, so you can complete it in one go.

Cord & Supplies
To create this pattern, you will need:
Materials
- 3mm Cotton Cord
- 1 x Keyring
- 6 x Large Hole Beads (at least 5mm hole)
All the cord and supplies you need is available in our shop. I used a 3mm single strand cotton cord in Silver Fox from our Rainbow Cord line.
This cord is super sturdy, so it doesn’t unravel too easily.
Cord Lengths Needed
- 1 x 90cm (35”)
- 4 x 100cm (39”)
Creating The Diamond Keychain Pattern
Step 1: Fold the 90 cm cord in half and make a Lark's Head knot onto the keyring with the loop end of the cord.
Step 2: Thread a bead through the 2 cord ends. Tape the cord ends together to make this easier.
Remove the tape for the cord ends.
Step 3: Attach 2 strands of 100 cm cords onto the left vertical cord and 2 strands onto the right vertical cord with the Reverse Lark's Head Plus Half Hitch knot.
Start with a Reverse Lark’s Head knot.
Make a Half Hitch knot to the right.
Make a Half Hitch knot to the left.
Shift the knot to the top of the cord.
Repeat on the right.
Repeat once more on each side.
Step 4: Starting with the middle 2 cords, make a diagonal row of 4 Double Half Hitch ("DHH") Knots to the left.
Step 5: With the middle-right cord as the anchor cord, make 3 diagonal DHH knots to the right.
Step 6: Make one more row of DHH knots underneath on both sides.
Step 7: Thread a bead through the far-right cord.
Use the same cord as a working cord for a DHH knot onto the cord underneath.
Repeat on the left side.
Step 8: Thread another bead through the middle 2 cords.
Step 9: Close off the inner Diamond with the left-anchor cord for 2 DHH knots to the right.
On the right-side, make 3 DHH knots to the left.
Step 10: Close off the outer Diamond with a diagonal row of DHH knots on both sides.
Step 11: Take the far-right cord and thread a bead through.
Use it as an anchor cord for a Diagonal row of DHH knots to the left.
Repeat on the left-side.
Step 12: Trim the fringe to your desired length and shape.
