How to Create Colorful Macrame Roses Wall Hanging | DIY Eden Rose Pattern Wall Hanging Tutorial

Bochiknot Macrame Wall Hanging Rose Pattern DIY

Hi macramé lovers and knotters!

Today, I’m sharing how to create a beautiful Eden rose wall hanging. It includes two of my favorite knots: the rose knot and the berry knot.

It’s been a while since I shared a pattern that incorporates a rose knot – the last one was this beautiful wreath wall hanging.

In that pattern, I made the rose knot with a separate strand of cord and then attached it to the wall hanging with an overhand knot from a separate string.

Today’s pattern also has rose knots made from a separate strand of cord, but these are attached directly onto the wall hanging – no need for an extra strand of cord. Making rose knots is a great way to use up all your left-over scraps of cord, kind of like recycling.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making this rose wall hanging. If you’re not keen to read all the instructions and would rather watch the process, check out our video tutorial on YouTube.

For help with any knots you’re unfamiliar with, refer to my 50 knots and sennits tutorial or my Bochiknot macramé knot playlist on YouTube. Here, you’ll find detailed step-by-step instructions for all the knots you’ll need.

Also, check out my rainbow line of recycled single-strand cotton cords.

All the materials you need are listed here and in the video tutorial. If you like, you could replace the wooden dowel with a piece of driftwood. For tips and tricks on how to find and clean driftwood, check out this tutorial.

This project is estimated to take 60 minutes, depending on your skill level.

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials & Supplies

Bochiknot Macrame - Single Strand Rainbow (natural)

For this particular project you will need some macrame cord. I’ve gone with a few different colors of 3mm Single Strand Cord from my Rainbow line. Feel free to use macrame cord you have on hand.

Below are the feather’s dimensions and cord length as follow:

Materials:

Length of Cords:

  • 14 x 300cm
  • 20 x 30cm, 60cm, or 90cm
  • 12 x 30cm

Creating the Rose Wall Hanging

Step 1: Attach all 14 of the 300cm strands of cord to the dowel using a lark’s head knot.

Step 2: Create a berry knot using the far left four cords. To do this, use the first and fourth cords as working strands, creating three consecutive square knots. Leave about 1cm of space above the first square knot – this makes room to tie the berry knot.

Once you’ve completed the three square knots, weave the middle two cords through the top middle hole above the first square knot.

Using the initial two working cords, finish off the berry knot by creating one last square knot underneath the first ones.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 six times, each time creating a berry knot with the next set of 4 cords.

Step 4: Create a series of alternating berry knots below the first row.

In between the first to berry knots on the left, take the right-most two cords of the first knot and the second knot’s left two cords. Create a berry knot with these four cords.

Repeat this process 5 times, creating a total of 6 berry knots in the second row.

Step 5: Create another row of alternating berry knots, three on each side of the design. This means that there will be no berry knot in the center of this row. Start with the far left four cords.

Step 6: Create two alternating berry knots underneath the previous sets of three berry knots. Start on the left, creating a berry knot in between the left two berry knots of the previous row.

Repeat this on the right side, mirroring what you did on the left.

You will see a triangular or diamond pattern taking shape.

Step 7: Create two berry knots on the far left, and two on the far right.

Step 8: Create one more alternating berry knot on each side of the pattern, underneath the previous row.

Step 9: Finish off with one last berry knot on each side, one on the far left, and one on the far right.

Step 10: Now, we incorporate the rose knots into the design. For this, I used different lengths of cord in various colors to create different-sized rose knots. To start off, I used two 60cm length cords, folded in half.

Weave one cord end through the two cords left of the middle on your design. The looped end must be on the wall hanging.

Wrap the cord ends around two fingers until you reach the end.

Pull the cord ends through the center to create the rose knot.

Slide the rose knot up to reach the top of the pattern.

Step 11: Repeat Step 10 several times, attaching several rose knots to the pattern’s center diamond. Use various lengths of cord in different colors. The cord lengths should be at least 30cm and can go up to 150cm. You can attach the rose knots to two vertical cords, or a single vertical cord, depending on the length of cord used.

Step 12: Create one berry knot each on the left and right sides. Start on the left, using cords 3-6 from the far left to create the first berry knot.

Repeat on the right side.

Step 13: Fill up the diamond pattern with rose knots.

Step 14: Create a diagonal row of berry knots. Start on the left, taking the right-most two cords underneath the last berry knot, and the two cords to the right of them, create another berry knot.

Repeat this three more times, creating a diagonal line of berry knots to the right.

Repeat this on the right side, mirroring what we did on the left. You should have six diagonal berry knots on each side.

Step 15: Finish off with one more berry knot in the center.

Step 16: To ensure the rose knots stay put when mounting the wall hanging, place the smaller rose knots a little on top of the larger rose knots to hold them in place. The smaller rose knots are usually a bit tighter than the larger ones, helping to hold them down.

Step 17: Add some fringe in between the row of diagonal berry knots. Take a 30cm strand of cord and create a lark’s head knot through the little hole between the two far-left berry knots. If there isn’t a hole, pull on the knots to loosen them up slightly.

Repeat this in between the remaining diagonal berry knots.

Step 18: Trim the fringe. Start by trimming the cord you attached in Step 17 using lark’s head knots. Move the other cords out of the way for this.

Cut the cords to the desired length. You can also brush out the fringe if you’d like to have a bit more texture. I combed halfway through the bottom half of the fringe.

Place the remaining cords flat on the work surface and cut them at the shortest cord’s length. Trim them diagonally on both sides, mirroring the shorter fringe. Comb out the bottom sections of the fringe.

Step 19: Create a handle using one of the scrap cords just trimmed off the fringe. Using the longest one of these, attach it to the ends of the dowel or piece of driftwood using a double overhand knot on each side. Tuck the cord ends behind the wall hanging.

Step 20: Trim the loose cord ends from the rose knots at the back of the wall hanging.
