What is a Macrame Plant Hanger?

Alright, picture this: you've got a cool way to give your leafy pals the ultimate hangout spot. Say hello to the fabulous world of Macrame Plant Hangers!

So, what's the deal? Well, a macrame plant hanger is like a cozy little hammock for your green buddies.

Instead of leaving your plants lonely on the floor or squished on a shelf, these hangers let you suspend them stylishly from the ceiling or a hook. It's like creating a mini jungle in the air!

You take some groovy cords, knot 'em up with your magical macrame skills (don't worry, it's easier than it sounds!), and voilà - you've got yourself a boho-chic plant hanger ready to rock your living space.

Not only does it add a splash of nature's beauty, but it's also a fun way to showcase your artsy side.

Remember, you don't have to be a pro-crafter to whip up one of these beauties. With a little patience and a whole lot of creativity, you'll have your plants hanging out in style in no time.

With this nifty plant hanger, you won't need any rings or hoops to start it off– just your trusty cords and a can-do attitude. I've designed this tutorial with simplicity in mind, so even if you're a macrame newbie, there's no need to worry.

This hanger is all about that chic minimalism – sleek and straightforward, allowing your beloved plant to take center stage. Macrame Knots You Will Need To Know

Getting familiar with the basic macrame knots and sennits is essential for mastering the art of Macrame. For this project, you will need to know the following knots and sennits:

  1. Overhand knot - It is a basic knot formed by simply passing one end of a rope or cord over and then back through the loop created, resulting in a knot that looks like a loop with the loose ends sticking out.
  2. Square Knot – The square knot, a classic macrame knot, is created by alternately crossing two cords over each other. This knot plays a significant role in Macrame as an essential decorative element, serving as the foundation for numerous patterns and designs on its own and in combination with other knots.
  3. 3-Ply Braid - A 3-ply braid, also known as a three-strand braid or plait, is a braiding technique that involves intertwining three strands of cord or rope, to create a woven pattern. It's one of the most basic and commonly used braiding methods.
  4. Gathering knot - A gathering knot, also known as a gathering stitch or gathering technique, is a simple and useful knot used to gather strands of cord together with a wrapping technique.

The knots and sennits above are basic knots widely used in macrame projects.

I have compiled a FREE EBOOK guide, "50 Macrame Knots & Sennit Guide," that goes over step by step with pictures on how to make 50 different knots and sennits (including all 4 knots and sennits listed above).

Selecting the right macrame cord is a crucial step in your project. Various options, such as cotton, jute, or nylon, offer distinct textures and appearances. Among the most common choices, today is cotton, known for its softness and durability.

For this pattern, we recommend using our 5mm Single-strand Rainbow cords, which are soft, sturdy, certified 100% chemical-free and eco-friendly, and made from recycled cotton materials. These cords come in various colors, making them ideal for your plant hanger design.

If you cannot find the single-strand Rainbow cotton cord, don't worry!

Our 3-ply Rainbow cotton cord is a suitable substitute that will work well for this pattern and offer a more textured look.

Regardless of your choice, ensure you opt for a soft and sturdy cord to ensure the durability and functionality of your plant hanger design.

Essential Tips You Can Keep in Mind

  1. Choose the right cord: Select a set of cords sturdy enough to hold the weight of your plant pot. Natural materials like cotton or hemp cords are commonly used for macrame plant hangers.
  2. Practice your knots: Practice the knots on a small cord piece before starting your project. This will help you become familiar with the techniques and gain confidence in your knotting skills.
  3. Consider the size of your plant pot: Consider the size and weight of your plant pot when determining the length and strength of your cords. Larger pots may require thicker or more cords for added support.
  4. Take breaks and step back: Macrame can be time-consuming, so it's essential to take breaks when needed. Step back to observe and admire your work from a distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much cord do I need for a macrame project?

The amount of cord needed for a macrame project depends on various factors, including the size, complexity, and design of the project.

It's essential to have an estimate of the desired finished dimensions and consider any additional length required for knots, fringes, or embellishments.

A rule of thumb: it's better to have slightly more cord than you think you'll need to avoid running out mid-project. Consulting macrame patterns or tutorials specific to your desired project can guide the approximate amount of cord required.

If you want to use a different cord size than what the pattern indicates, my cord sizing walks you through the amount of cord you will need to adjust with changes in cord sizes.

Can my macrame plant hanger be used outside?

An indoor macrame plant hanger is not ideally suited for outdoor plant hangers use. Indoor macrame plant hangers are typically made from materials like cotton, which are more susceptible to damage from outdoor elements such as moisture, sunlight, and harsh weather conditions.
