The Berry knot (Square Knot Button)

Bochiknot macrame berry knot step by step guide

The Berry knot is the modern-day term for the vintage Square Knot Button

This knot is made from a series of consecutive Square knots, weaved together to form a berry-like or button-like shape. It is a popular decorative knot found in many modern macrame projects including wall hangings, plant hangers, and handbags.

Ensure you familiarize yourself with the Square knot prior to making the Berry knot.

How to Tie a Berry Knot Step-by-Step

  1. Make 3 consecutive Square knots. *Note: for a slightly flatter Modified Berry knot, make 2 consecutive Square knots instead of 3 and then continue with the remaining steps.

  2. Take the middle 2 anchor cords and bring them above the Square knots through the middle hole to the back.

  3. Straighten out the cords at the back by pulling the anchor cords down.

  4. Using the same working cords and anchor cords, make one Square knot to secure the Berry knot.

This knot is a textured button knot that uses a lot of cord to make. Note that if you are planning to incorporate the Berry knot into your macrame designs, ensure to apply the higher end of our Golden Ratio when measuring cords for your projects.

This means, using a multiple of 4.5 or 5 times the length of the approximate project size (length) you want to make and then multiplying it by 2 if you are folding it in half to attach it onto a dowel/ring/other object.

Refer to our Golden Ratio video tutorial for details on how to measure cords for your designs.
