This Versatile Ruby Keychain Pattern is All You Need
I love how versatile macramé is!
I love challenging myself to use designs in places you won’t necessarily find them. That’s the inspiration for this intricate keychain design.
It’s a unique pattern I typically use in wall hangings and other large designs, but it works well in this small keychain design.
This Double Half Hitch knot ruby pattern is one of my all-time favorites, and it was so rewarding to use it in an unexpected way.
It’s also a great way to practice the Double Half Hitch knot, especially if you’re new to macramé and still developing the basic skills.
Note that this is an intermediate-level pattern, so it’s a bit trickier than some of the other designs in our tutorials.
Speaking of basic skills, we have a great tool to fast track your skill-building from beginner to macramé master: our Bochiknot Macramé Community on Patreon.
When you sign up, you get access to regular tutorials, tips, and tricks, and exclusive discounts on macramé materials and supplies. You’ll also join an entire community of knotters with whom you can exchange ideas, and you will get one-on-one support from me.
When joining the Making Macramé Masterpiece tier, you get a monthly goodie bag with everything you need for that month’s project, shipped to your door. Cool, right?
What if you’re not sure that you’re that into macramé yet? Then, you can try out our Kami Wall Hanging starter kit.
This kit contains everything you need to create a beginner-friendly wall hanging design and a step-by-step guide and video tutorial.
It covers the six basic knots of macramé, giving you a feel for the art form without committing to buying a bunch of supplies.
This project should take about 15 minutes, depending on your skill level.

Creating The Ruby Keychain Pattern
Step 1: Attach one 100cm cord to the keychain using a Lark’s Head knot.
Step 2: Flip the keychain around. Attach one 100cm cord to the right cord using a Reverse Lark’s Head knot.
Repeat on the left side.
Step 3: Close off the top diamond. Use the far left cord as an anchor cord, making two Double Half Hitch (DHH) knots to the right.
Repeat on the right side, mirroring what was done on the left.
Close off the pattern with one more DHH knot to the right.
Step 4: Create the second level of diamonds in the pattern.
Attach one 90cm cord to the far left cord using a Reverse Lark’s Head with Double Half Hitch (RLHDHH) knot.
Using the far left cord as an anchor cord, create two DHH knots to the right.
Using the middle left cord as the anchor cord, create two DHH knots to the left.
Repeat on the right, mirroring what was done on the left.
Step 5: Attach the large hole bead to the middle two cords. Tape the ends to make it easier to thread the bead onto the cord.
Step 6: Close off the center diamond.
Using the same anchor cord on the right, make two DHH knots to the left.
Repeat on the left, mirroring what was done on the right.
Close off the diamond with one more DHH to the left.
Step 7: Thread a bead onto the far-right cord. Tape the ends to make this easier.
Step 8: Create the next level of diamond patterns.
Using the second last cord from the right as a working cord, make two DHH knots to the right.
Using the same anchor cord, make two DHH knots to the left.
Using the center-right cord as an anchor cord, make three DHH knots to the left.
Repeat on the left, mirroring what was done on the right.
Step 9: Close off the bottom diamond.
Using the same right anchor chord as before, make two DHH knots to the left.
Using the same left anchor cord as before, make three DHH knots to the left.
Step 10: Trim the fringe.
