FRINGE FREE Macrame: Heart Coaster Tutorial for a Clean Finish
Fringe-Free Perfection: DIY Macrame Heart Coaster Tutorial for a Tidy Finish
If you’re anything like me, you love the flow of macrame but sometimes want a polished, clean look that doesn’t involve the classic fringe.
Well, today’s project is perfect for that!
We’re diving into a fringe-free macrame heart coaster, a simple yet stylish design that’s both beginner-friendly and beautifully neat.
When I first got into macrame, I was all about the fringe—the fluffier, the better!
But as I experimented, I realized how much a fringe-free edge could elevate certain projects.
This heart-shaped coaster is an excellent example: it’s tidy, minimal, and perfect for adding a warm, handcrafted touch to any space without all the extra fluff.
I’ll be walking you through the knots and techniques to create this clean-lined beauty step-by-step.
If you’re new to macrame, don’t worry!
We’ll take it nice and slow, and by the end, you’ll have a stylish, functional coaster ready to show off.
Let’s get started on knotting something beautiful and simple!
Knots You Need to Know to Make a Macrame Heart Coaster
Getting comfortable with a few basic macrame knots is so important—it’s like having the keys to unlock a world of beautiful, handcrafted projects!
For this heart coaster, we’re keeping it simple with just two essential knots: the Square Knot and the Double Half Hitch Knot.
Mastering these two will open up so many possibilities for your macrame journey.
Let’s start with the Square Knot.
This is a classic macrame knot and one of the most versatile tools in your macrame toolkit.
You’ll find it in so many projects, from wall hangings and plant hangers to bracelets and keychains.
It’s simple, but it forms a strong, clean pattern that adds structure and beauty to any design.
Then there’s the Double Half Hitch Knot—another staple in macrame.
This knot is incredibly flexible and forms the foundation of more intricate patterns.
It’s the secret behind those lovely, structured lines and shapes in macrame, so getting comfortable with this one will really level up your projects!
These knots may be basic, but trust me, they’re anything but boring!
Once you get the hang of them, you’ll feel ready to tackle all kinds of macrame creations, including our cozy, fringe-free heart coaster.

Important Macrame Terms for Beginners
Before we begin, we should review a few important terms used in macrame.
This will help you understand the techniques more easily, follow patterns confidently, and set a strong foundation for your macrame journey.
- Knots: Macrame involves various knots, like the overhand knot and alternating overhand knot. Learning these basic knots is key to building a solid foundation. Check the "Macrame Knots You Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
- Cords: The primary material in macrame is cords made from cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. They come in different thicknesses and colors. You can learn more about macrame cords with our "Macrame ESSENTIALS: Everything You Need—Cord, Tools, & Materials" post.
- Loop: A loop is formed by crossing the cord over itself to create a ring-like shape. Loops are essential in many macrame designs.
- Fringe: The loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to your desired length. Want to learn more about fringe? Here's "My Top 5 Secrets for Creating PERFECTLY Styled Fringe" post you might find helpful.
- Anchor Cord: The fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached. It provides stability and support for your design.
- Working Cord: The cord that is actively manipulated to create knots and patterns throughout the project.
- Sennit: A series of knots grouped together to form a pattern or part of your macrame project.
- Frays and Tassels: The loose ends of your cords are often used intentionally as decorative elements like frays or tassels in your design.
Macrame Heart Coaster Cords and Materials
One of the best things about this heart coaster project is how simple it is in terms of materials—just a roll of macrame cord, and you're good to go!
It’s easy, straightforward, and perfect for beginners.
For this project, I went with a 3mm single-strand cotton cord in a soft blush color.
I picked this specific cord for its texture, thickness, and overall feel, which work beautifully to bring out the knot pattern in a lovely, subtle way.
The blush tone gives the coaster a romantic, cozy vibe, ideal for a heart-themed design.
Of course, you can choose any color that fits your style.
We have a wide selection of over 30 colors in our shop, so you can find one that speaks to you and makes your heart coaster truly unique.

-
Take the 4 cords in the middle and make one Alternating Square Knot to connect both sides.
Step 5:
- Add another 4 cords (each 50 cm) on both sides

-
Fill in the center of the heart shape with Square Knots, adding layers to make it fuller.
Step 9:
- Starting from the far left 4 cords, create a row of Square Knots moving inward until you see a V shape beginning to form at the heart's point.
Step 10:
- Using a 50 cm cord as an anchor, make a Double Half Hitch (DHH) knot with the middle-right working cord.
- Include the working cord with the anchor cord for each DHH knot.
Step 11:
-
Trim the second anchor cord when you’re finished with this row.
Step 12:
-
After the last DHH knot, keep the second anchor cord intact for extra strength.
Step 13:
-
Repeat the same knotting pattern on the other side to mirror the left.
Step 14:
- On the right side, use two cords as anchors and one cord as the working cord to make a diagonal DHH knot.
Step 15:

Bring the top cords to the back of the design and secure them with a DHH knot for a neat finish.
Step 16:
