Macrame Knots You'll Need to Know for Your Boho Macramé Phone Bag

Let’s dive into the knots you’ll need to create your boho macramé phone bag!

Each of these knots forms the foundation of this project, giving your bag that perfect mix of texture and structure.

Here’s what you’ll need to know:

  • Lark’s Head Knot: This fundamental mounting knot lets you easily attach cords to a dowel, ring, or other structure, creating a secure foundation to build your design.
  • Square Knot: One of the most versatile macramé knots, the square knot is perfect for creating patterns and textures, and it’s often the backbone of many designs.
  • Half Hitch Knot: A must-know for adding lines and curves to your work, the half hitch is simple yet essential for creating intricate patterns.
  • Overhand Knot: This simple knot keeps cord ends secure and prevents fraying, adding a neat, functional finish.
  • Berry Knot: A fun twist on the square knot, the berry knot creates a raised, textured effect, perfect for adding a unique, decorative touch.
  • 4-Ply Braid: This braiding technique involves four cords woven together, giving a tight, interlocked pattern for a sturdy handle or decorative accent.
  • Gathering Knot: Used to wrap and hold cords together, this finishing knot is great for creating a polished look at the end of a piece.
  • The Rya Knot, or rya loop, brings that coveted fringe to life!

Each knot has its own role in macramé and, when combined, allows you to craft a beautiful, durable bag.

Practice these knots as you go—building confidence with each one will open up new design possibilities for future projects!

Important Macrame Terms for Beginners

Before we begin, we should review a few important terms used in macrame.

This will help you understand the techniques more easily, follow patterns confidently, and set a strong foundation for your macrame journey.

  • Knots: Macrame involves various knots, like the overhand knot and alternating overhand knot. Learning these basic knots is key to building a solid foundation. Check the "Macrame Knots You Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
  • Cords: The primary material in macrame is cords made from cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. They come in different thicknesses and colors. You can learn more about macrame cords with our "Macrame ESSENTIALS: Everything You Need—Cord, Tools, & Materials" post.
  • Loop: A loop is formed by crossing the cord over itself to create a ring-like shape. Loops are essential in many macrame designs.
  • Fringe: The loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to your desired length. Want to learn more about fringe? Here's "My Top 5 Secrets for Creating PERFECTLY Styled Fringe" post you might find helpful.
  • Anchor Cord: The fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached. It provides stability and support for your design.
  • Working Cord: The cord that is actively manipulated to create knots and patterns throughout the project.
  • Sennit: A series of knots grouped together to form a pattern or part of your macrame project.
  • Frays and Tassels: The loose ends of your cords are often used intentionally as decorative elements like frays or tassels in your design.

Macrame Phone Carrying Bag: Cords and Materials Needed

A BOHO-CHIC Macrame Bag You’ll Love – Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial Inside!

Ready to craft your own stylish macramé phone carrying bag?

This boho-inspired accessory is all about mixing textures and adding a touch of personal flair.

Here’s everything you’ll need to bring it to life:

3mm Macramé Cord

This is the main material for your bag’s structure. A 3mm single-strand or braided cord offers the perfect balance of flexibility and strength, making it easy to tie knots while still holding shape.

Choose a color that fits your boho vibe—natural tones work well for a classic look, while bold colors can add a modern twist.

For this pattern, we used a 3mm multi-ply cotton cord in Sage Green and Autumn Redwood, adding a warm, earthy vibe.

You can use any 3mm cotton cord—whether single-strand or 3-ply—and it’ll work beautifully!

1-2mm Macramé String

I also used 2mm macrame string for finer details, like securing your decorative elements or adding smaller knots.

It’s perfect for creating subtle accents without overwhelming the main design.
