The Macrame Lark’s Head Knot: A Simple Start to Beautiful Designs

The Lark’s Head Knot is one of the most basic and essential knots in macrame, making it a perfect starting point for beginners.

Its simplicity doesn’t take away from its importance—this knot serves as the foundation for many macrame projects, from wall hangings to plant hangers.

What is the Lark’s Head Knot?

In short, it’s a knot used to attach cords to a base, like a dowel, rod, or ring.

You simply fold the cord in half, place the loop over your base, and pull the two loose ends through the loop.

This easy process creates a secure and strong knot that anchors your cords, allowing you to build out the rest of your design with confidence.

Steps to Tie a Lark’s Head Knot:

  • Step 1: Fold your cord in half to create a loop at the center.
  • Step 2: Place the loop over the dowel, rod, or ring.
  • Step 3: Pull the two loose ends of the cord through the loop.
  • Step 4: Tighten the knot by pulling the loose ends downward.

Reverse Lark's Head knot

This is a slight variation where the knot is tied in reverse, giving a cleaner look from the front.

Instead of placing the loop over the dowel and pulling the loose cords through, you place the loop under the dowel and pull the cords up through the loop.

This reverses the knot’s appearance and is often used when you want a smoother, more refined look.

Where You’ll Use It

Whether you’re making a wall hanging or a small accessory, the Lark’s Head Knot will likely be the first step. It’s the perfect way to attach cords to your base and create a strong, organized foundation for the rest of your knots and patterns.

If you’re new to macrame, mastering the Lark’s Head Knot will open up a world of possibilities for your crafting journey.
