Macrame Knots You Need to Know

For this macrame flower project, you only need to get cozy with two simple knots that will bring your creation to life—the Double Half-Hitch (DHHK) and the Gathering knot.

Don’t sweat it if you’ve never done these before—I’ll be right there with you, guiding you through each step so you’ll feel confident and ready to take on this project in no time.

Getting the hang of these knots beforehand will make the whole process smoother and more fun as you find your rhythm with the movements.

Trust me, you’ll be knotting like an all-star once you start.

  • Double Half Hitch Knot (DHHK): This versatile DHH knot is crucial in forming your flower's detailed, curved petals. It allows you to create smooth lines and precise shapes, giving your flower its lifelike appearance. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll see how easy it is to manipulate the cord into beautiful designs.
  • Gathering Knot: The Gathering knot helps bring everything together at the center of your flower. We’ll use this knot to bundle the cords neatly, giving your flower structure and holding the design in place. It’s a simple but powerful knot that finishes off the project beautifully.

These two knots are all you need to create this stunning macrame flower.

We’ll walk you through each step, so even if you’re new to these knots, you can easily follow along and complete this gorgeous project!

Important Macrame Terms for Beginners

Before we begin, it's probably best to go over a few important terms used in macrame.

This will help you understand the techniques more easily, follow patterns with confidence, and set a strong foundation for your macrame journey.

  • Knots: Macrame involves various knots, like the overhand knot and alternating overhand knot. Learning these basic knots is key to building a strong foundation.Check the "Macrame Knots You Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
  • Cords: The primary material in macrame is cords made from cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. They come in different thicknesses and colors. You can learn more about macrame cord with our "Macrame ESSENTIALS: Everything You Need—Cord, Tools, & Materials" post.
  • Loop: A loop is formed by crossing the cord over itself to create a ring-like shape. Loops are essential in many macrame designs.
  • Fringe: The loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to your desired length.
  • Anchor Cord: The fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached. It provides stability and support for your design.
  • Working Cord: The cord that is actively manipulated to create knots and patterns throughout the project.
  • Sennit: A series of knots grouped together to form a pattern or part of your macrame project.
  • Frays and Tassels: The loose ends of your cords, often used intentionally as decorative elements like frays or tassels in your design.

Cord, Supplies, & Tools for a Macrame Inspired Real-Life Flower in a Pot

How to Macrame an Inspired Real-Life Flower in a Pot

Before we create this beautiful macrame flower, let's make sure you have everything you need.

You’ll only need one roll of macrame cord for this project, making it a simple yet impactful craft.

I opted for a 3mm Bamboo Macrame Cord for that soft, natural look and feel, and I also mixed in some Metallic Cord for a touch of shimmer.

The combination makes the flower pop, but feel free to get creative with your cord choices—experiment with colors and textures to make the design yours.

The plant pot is totally optional. If you want to turn your macrame flower into a cute potted plant, any small pot will work.

You can find one similar to the style I used on Amazon or even upcycle an old pot you have lying around.

The flower looks terrific in a pot, adding a touch of handcrafted nature to your home decor.

But here's the fun part—you don’t have to use a pot at all!

You can easily attach this macrame flower to other projects, like wall hangings or bags, for an extra layer of texture and a stunning 3D effect.

Imagine this beautiful flower blooming as part of a larger project—it’s sure to stand out and add a unique twist to your design.

In this blog post, we’ll focus solely on creating the macrame flower itself.

But what you decide to do with it afterward is entirely up to you.

Your creativity is limited, so don’t be afraid to play around with different ideas and see where your imagination takes you.
