Important Macrame Terms for Beginners
Before we begin, it's probably best to go over a few important terms used in macrame.
This will help you understand the techniques more easily, follow patterns with confidence, and set a strong foundation for your macrame journey.
- Knots: Macrame involves various knots, like the overhand knot and alternating overhand knot. Learning these basic knots is key to building a strong foundation. Check the "Macrame Knots You Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
- Cords: The primary material in macrame is cords made from cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. They come in different thicknesses and colors. You can learn more about macrame cord with our "Macrame ESSENTIALS: Everything You Need—Cord, Tools, & Materials" post.
- Loop: A loop is formed by crossing the cord over itself to create a ring-like shape. Loops are essential in many macrame designs.
- Fringe: The loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to your desired length. Want to learn more about fringe? here's "My Top 5 Secrets for Creating PERFECTLY Styled Fringe" post you might find helpful.
- Anchor Cord: The fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached. It provides stability and support for your design.
- Working Cord: The cord that is actively manipulated to create knots and patterns throughout the project.
- Sennit: A series of knots grouped together to form a pattern or part of your macrame project.
- Frays and Tassels: The loose ends of your cords, often used intentionally as decorative elements like frays or tassels in your design.
Macrame Mini Wreath Ornament: Cord and Materials
To create your beautiful Macrame Mini Wreath Ornament, you’ll need just a few simple materials to bring your design to life. Here’s what you’ll need:
-
3-4mm Macrame Cord: This will be the main material for your wreath. I recommend using a 3-4mm single-strand cotton cord. It’s thick enough to hold its shape but soft and flexible, making it easy to work with—especially for beginners. This size will give your wreath a lovely, polished look while still allowing the knots to stand out beautifully.
-
1-2mm Macrame String: This thinner cord will be used to tie smaller details or accents onto the wreath. The finer string helps add a bit of contrast and extra texture to the design. It’s also perfect for tying smaller knots that will give your wreath those finishing touches.
-
Ribbon: What’s a holiday wreath without a festive ribbon? Choose a ribbon that matches your holiday theme—whether it’s classic red, green, or gold, or something more whimsical like a plaid or glittery design. The ribbon will be used to tie a bow at the top or bottom of the wreath, adding a decorative, festive touch.
With these materials, you’re all set to create a stunning mini wreath that’s perfect for hanging on your Christmas tree or gifting to loved ones.

*Note: We recommend following the tutorial video for more detailed instructions and to achieve the best results.
This will provide additional guidance and clarity as you work through each step.
Step 1:
- Place a 150 cm cord horizontally, then place another cord vertically over it, leaving 4 inches of space at the top.
- Tie a Double Half Hitch (DHH) knot with the vertical cord.
Step 2:
- Leave about 3.5 inches on the left end, then take another 150 cm cord and tie a DHH knot on the right side, leaving 5 inches of space at the top.
Step 3:
- Fold the right cord end over to the left and make 2 DHH knots.
- This completes one U-shaped DHH knot pattern.
Step 4:
- Create another U-shaped pattern by making a row of DHH knots to the right and then back over to the left.
Step 5:
- Repeat the U-shaped pattern until you have 13 patterns in total.
Step 6:
- Take the bottom two cords and tie a DHH knot.
Step 7:
- Using the next set of cords on both sides, tie a Double Overhand Knot.
- Repeat with the next set of cords above.
Step 8:
- With the remaining two cords at the top, tie an Overhand Knot and trim any excess cord.
Step 9:
- Weave the four cord ends through the loops at the back and cut off any extra cord.
Step 10:
- Make a bow using a 10-inch ribbon, and weave a 15 cm string through the back of the bow.
Step 11:
- Weave the string ends through the top of the wreath and tie a Double Overhand Knot at the back.
- Cut off the extra string.
