DIY Macramé Dog Collar: Boho Pet Style for Under $10

Macrame Dog Collar

Creating a stylish macramé dog collar doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. With just a few basic knots, affordable cord, and about an hour of your time, you can craft a handmade collar that looks boutique-quality for a fraction of the price.

This beginner-friendly project is perfect if you're new to macramé or simply want a fun DIY that blends creativity with practicality.

Beyond saving money, making your own dog collar lets you customize colors, thickness, and style to match your pet's personality. You can choose soft, durable cord for comfort while still achieving that trendy, handcrafted look often seen in premium pet boutiques.

It's also a satisfying way to use leftover macramé cord or try a small project before moving on to bigger pieces.

The result is a durable, comfortable, and unique collar your dog can wear proudly — one that looks far more expensive than it actually is.

This will provide additional guidance and clarity as you work through each step.

Step1: Attach the first cord to the buckle (Color 1).

  • Cut a 320cm strand of Color 1. Measure 70cm from one end and fold at that mark.
  • Use a Lark's Head knot to attach the folded loop to one side of the buckle so the 70cm short tail sits on the inside of the buckle. The long tail will hang to the outside.

Step 2: Attach the second cord to the opposite side (Color 2).

  • Repeat the same with a 320cm strand of Color 2.
  • Fold at 70cm, attach with a Lark's Head knot on the opposite side so the 70cm tail is centered toward the middle of your future knotting area.

Step 3: Weave a spacer cord through the middle.

  • Take a 140cm strand of Color 2 and weave it between the two Lark's Head knots.
  • Stop at the halfway point. This will sit in the center and act as part of the anchor group for your square knots.

Step 4: Begin consecutive Square Knots.

  • Use the far left and far right cords as your working cords. The remaining cords in the middle act as anchors to produce a thicker collar.
  • Tie consecutive square knots (one after another) until the knotted section measures about 24cm.

Step 5: Add the D-ring and reinforce with extra knots.

  • Thread all anchor cords through the D-ring. Using the far left and far right working cords, tie one square knot across the D-ring, then make two more square knots beneath it to secure the hardware in place.

Step 6: Thread the working ends through the other side of the buckle.

  • After the knotted section, pass all cords top-down through the opposing side of the buckle. You can feed them one at a time or in small groups—whatever feels easiest.
  • Leave about 1.5 inches (≈ 3.8cm) of loose cord past the buckle.

Step 7: Finish with a Gathering Knot.

  • Use a 60cm strand of Color 1 to wrap a neat Gathering Knot around all the cord ends where you left that 1.5-inch space.
  • Make a small loop with the short end, wrap the long end around several times until the exposed area is covered, pass the tail through the loop and pull tight. Trim excess ends flush.

Tips, troubleshooting & finishing touches

  • Keep tension even. Consistent tension across square knots will give your Macrame Dog Collar a professional finish.
  • Measure as you go. Recheck the length of the knotted section if you're making a smaller or larger collar—adjust the number of square knots accordingly.
  • Choose a cord with structure. A 4mm single-strand cotton cord offers softness with enough body to hold its shape and support hardware.
  • Secure the D-ring well. Tie extra square knots around the D-ring to keep it from sliding under pulling pressure.
  • Customize colors. Two contrasting colors make the weave pop—try bright + neutral combos or tone-on-tone for a subtle look.

Final thoughts

Making a Macrame Dog Collar is a fast, rewarding project that teaches fundamental knotting skills and results in a beautiful, functional accessory for your pup. It's budget-friendly, customizable, and a great way to practice repeatable knot patterns. Give it a try—your dog (and your handmade-supply budget) will thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cord size is best for a Macrame Dog Collar?

A 4mm cotton cord provides the right balance of flexibility and strength for most small-to-medium dogs. For very large or strong dogs, consider a thicker cord or reinforcing the collar with additional anchor cords.

How long should the knotted section be?

Aim for about 24cm (9.5 inches) of knotted macrame from top to bottom for a comfortable, visible collar band. Adjust the knot count to shorten or lengthen this section to fit your dog's neck size.

Can I wash a Macrame Dog Collar?

Yes. Cotton cord can be hand-washed gently and air-dried. Remove metal hardware before washing if possible, and avoid harsh detergents to preserve color and cord strength.

Is the Macrame Dog Collar safe for dogs?

When constructed correctly—with secure knots, properly sized hardware, and appropriate cord strength—the Macrame Dog Collar is safe for everyday wear. Always check for wear and replace if the cord frays or hardware loosens.

How do I adjust the collar length?

The easiest way is to change the tail lengths when attaching cords to the buckle (the original Lark's Head step) or alter the number of square knots in the knotted section. Re-measure regularly while working.

Happy knotting and enjoy gifting or decorating with your tiny textured wreaths this season.
