When you learn basic knots like the square knot and double half hitch knot, you'll be all set to make many different macrame projects.

For this particular macrame project, I chose a 3mm single-strand cotton cord in the beautiful shade of blush.

The decision to use this specific type and size of cord was made with careful consideration for its texture, thickness, and color, ensuring that it complements the design and adds a touch of elegance to the final creation.

The blush hue, in particular, adds a soft and romantic feel to the project, making it perfect for crafting a charming and visually appealing macrame piece.

    Materials Needed (for 1 unit):

    Cotton Lengths Needed:

    • 24 x 50 cm (20")
    • 8 x 40 cm (16")
    • 2 x 50 cm (20")

    * Note: The cord lengths suggested here are based on the pattern using a 3mm single strand twist should you use a different size cord or cord from another brand, actual cord lengths may differ slightly and, therefore, should be adjusted accordingly.

    1. Knots:  A knot is made by looping, intertwining, or tying a strand of cord and macrame, involves various knots, such as the square knot, and the double half hitch knot. Understanding these basic knot patterns creates the foundation of Macrame. Refer to the "Macrame Knots You Will Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern
    2. Cords: Cords are the primary material used in Macrame. They are made of cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. Macrame cords come in various thicknesses and colors.
    3. Fringe: Fringe refers to the loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element to beginner projects. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to a desired length.
    4. Anchor cord: refers to the fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached or knotted, providing stability and support to the design.
    5. Working cord: This is the cord that is actively used to create knots and patterns, manipulated and moved throughout the project to form the desired design.

    Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions

    Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to make the Fluffy Macrame Heart Keychain

    Step #1:

    • Pin or tape down 4 x 50 cm cords and make a Square knot 2" down.

    Step #2:

    • Add 4 more cords to the left for 2 diagonal Square knots to the left.

    Step #3:

    • Repeat the same pattern on the left-side mirroring the right-side.

    • With the middle 4 cords, make an Alternating Square knot.

    Step #5:

    • Add another 4 x 50 cm cords on the right and left sides and make an individual Square knot on both sides as well.

    Step #6:

    • Add alternating Square knots on both sides.

    • Add a group of 4 x 40 cm cords on the right and left sides and add 2 diagonal Square knots on both sides.

    Step #8:

    • Fill in the middle section with Square knots.

    Step #9:

    • Starting with the far-left 4 cords, make a Square knot, then continue with Square knots until a V-shaped pattern is formed.

    Step #10:

    • Using a 50 cm cord as an anchor cord, make a Double Half Hitch ("DHH") knot with the Middle-right working cord. Then include the working cord with the anchor cord for the next DHH knot.

    Step #11:

    • Cut off the second anchor cord and repeat.

    Step #12:

    • Once the last DHH knot is made, do not cut off the second anchor cord.

    Step #13:

    • Repeat the same pattern on the other side.

    Step #14:

    • Use 2 cords on the right-side as the anchor cord and one cord on the left as the working cord for a diagonal DHH knot.

    Step #15:

    • Bring the top cords to the back and make a DHH knot.

    • Weave the cord ends through the Square knots at the back and then trim off excess cords.
