How to Make a Macrame Star Snowflake Ornament: Perfect for Christmas

There’s something truly magical about the first snowfall here in Canada.
As the snow blankets the ground, it transforms the world into a shimmering winter wonderland, signaling the start of the holiday season.
In my home, it brings an extra dose of festive joy and cozy vibes.
Inspired by that snowy magic and the spirit of Christmas, I created the Star Snowflake Ornament!
This design combines the delicate beauty of a snowflake with the timeless charm of a star, making it the perfect addition to your Christmas tree.
It’s a little piece of winter wonder you can hang indoors, bringing the magic of the season right into your home.
Here’s everything you’ll need to get started!
Let’s bring a touch of winter magic to your holiday decor.
Nicole’s Tips for Success
As someone who loves Christmas I’ve made my fair share of snowflakes, and here are some tips to help you along the way:
-
Handling Metallic Cords: Metallic threads can fray easily. To prevent this, tie an overhand knot at the ends of your cords while you work.
-
Achieving Perfect Tension: If you notice gaps in your knots, gently pull the anchor cords to tighten everything up. This will keep your design crisp and neat.
-
Adding a Personal Touch: Experiment with different cord colors, add beads, or play around with patterns to make each ornament uniquely yours.
With these tips, you can take your ornaments to the next level and make them truly one of a kind.
Knots You Will Need to Know
Mastering essential macramé knots is the foundation of creating beautiful, polished projects.
For this project, you’ll need to know the following knots:
- Reverse Lark's Head Knot
- Double Half-Hitch Knot
- Overhand Knot
These are fundamental knots commonly used in many macrame projects, and learning them will give you a solid foundation for creating not only this macrame but also countless other designs.

Important Macrame Terms for Beginners
Before we begin, we should review a few important terms used in macrame.
This will help you understand the techniques more easily, follow patterns confidently, and set a strong foundation for your macrame journey.
- Knots: Macrame involves various knots, like the overhand knot and alternating overhand knot. Learning these basic knots is key to building a solid foundation. Check the "Macrame Knots You Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
- Cords: The primary material in macrame is cords made from cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. They come in different thicknesses and colors. You can learn more about macrame cords with our "Macrame ESSENTIALS: Everything You Need—Cord, Tools, & Materials" post.
- Loop: A loop is formed by crossing the cord over itself to create a ring-like shape. Loops are essential in many macrame designs.
- Fringe: The loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to your desired length. Want to learn more about fringe? Here's "My Top 5 Secrets for Creating PERFECTLY Styled Fringe" post you might find helpful.
- Anchor Cord: The fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached. It provides stability and support for your design.
- Working Cord: The cord that is actively manipulated to create knots and patterns throughout the project.
- Sennit: A series of knots grouped together to form a pattern or part of your macrame project.
- Frays and Tassels: The loose ends of your cords are often used intentionally as decorative elements like frays or tassels in your design.
Gather Your Cord & Materials
-
2-inch wooden rings – These serve as the base for your ornament.
-
Sparkly cords – I recommend my natural and metallic single-strand cords in silver or rose gold to add that holiday shimmer.
-
3-4mm cords – Choose the thickness that works best for you.
You can find the metallic cords I use in my Bochiknot shop—perfect for adding sparkle to any holiday macrame project! With a variety of colors, they’re ideal for ornaments, garlands, or even a statement tree topper.
Once you have your supplies, it’s time to dive into the creative process—my favorite part!
So grab your cords, turn on some holiday music, and let’s make something magical together.

This ornament uses the Double Half Hitch Knot (DHH), a classic macrame knot. If you’re not familiar with it yet, don’t worry—I’ll guide you every step of the way.
Step 1:
- With a 45 cm (18") cord, measure one end to 18 cm (7") and fold the cord over.
- Repeat this with a second 45 cm cord and ensure that the shorter ends are facing the outer sides.

Step 2:
- With the lopsided lengths of cords, attach both strands onto the ring with reverse Lark's Head knots.
- Attach a third 45 cm cord folded in half in the middle with a Reverse Lark's Head knot.

Step 3:
- With the second cord from the left as an anchor cord, make a Double Half Hitch ("DHH") Knot to the right.
- Repeat the same on the right-side, mirroring the left.

Step 4:
- With the middle 2 cords make a diagonal DHH knot to the left.

Step 5:
- With the outer cords, make a larger V-shaped DHH knot pattern underneath.

Step 6:
- With the second cord from the left as a working cord, make a DHH knot onto the middle-left cord.
- Then fold the anchor to the opposite direction for another DHH knot.

Step 7:
- Repeat the same pattern on the right-side mirroring the left.

Step 8:
- Make one more diagonal DHH knot to the left with the middle 2 cords.

Step 9:
- Repeat the same pattern for 4 more sections.

Step 10:
- Attach a 45 cm folded in half onto the ring with a Reverse Lark's Head knot.
- Then attach a 55 cm cord on each side folded in half with Reverse Lark's Head knots.

Step 11:
- Repeat for the same knotted pattern as the other sections.

Step 12:
- With the 2 longer cords, make an Overhand knot at the top.

Step 13:
- Weave the side cords through the knots at the back and snip off the excess.
- With the remaining cords, trim them off and dab some glue to secure the ends.

Why I Love This Snowflake Design
I call this a “Starflake” because it combines the symmetrical beauty of a star with the delicate charm of a snowflake.
Each one is unique, just like real snowflakes, and they add such a lovely handmade touch to holiday décor.
They also make heartfelt gifts or stocking stuffers for friends and family.
One of my favorite things about this project is how every knot you tie brings your personal creativity into the design.
No two Star Snowflakes are ever alike, and that’s what makes them so special.
