- Guitar Straps: For musicians, a macrame strap is a beautiful way to add some artistry to your performances while keeping your guitar secure.
What I love most about these straps is that they’re not only functional, but they also allow you to express your creativity.
To me, a versatile macrame strap is more than just an accessory; it’s a reflection of your creativity and the perfect blend of beauty and practicality.
So, whether you’re looking for a new project to challenge your skills or a stylish solution for your daily needs, this is one macrame project that delivers it all.

Knots You Will Need to Know to DIY Macrame Strap
Understanding and practicing essential macrame knots is key to successfully creating a macrame strap.
For this project, you’ll need to know the following knots:
- Lark’s Head Knot
- Square Knot
- Gathering Knot
These are fundamental knots commonly used in many macrame projects, and learning them will give you a solid foundation for creating not only this macrame strap but also countless other designs.
A Closer Look at the Knots
-
Lark’s Head Knot
This knot is your starting point—it’s used to attach your cords securely to a dowel, ring, or other structure. As a foundational mounting knot, the Lark’s Head Knot provides stability for your entire project, making it essential for any macrame piece. -
Square Knot
One of the most versatile and widely used macrame knots, the Square Knot is created by tying two half knots in opposite directions. It forms a decorative, symmetrical pattern that’s perfect for straps, wall hangings, plant hangers, and more. Its adaptability makes it a must-know knot for any macrame enthusiast. -
Gathering Knot
Often used as a finishing knot, the Gathering Knot wraps around multiple cords, securing them together into a neat, polished bundle. You’ll often see this knot at the base of macrame projects, giving them a tidy and cohesive look.
Practice Makes Perfect
Mastering these knots through practice and repetition will build your confidence and set you up for success.
Once you’re comfortable with these basics, you’ll be ready to tackle more intricate patterns and expand your macrame skills.
For extra support, consider keeping a knot guide handy as you learn and create—it’s an invaluable resource for beginners and seasoned crafters alike.

Important Macrame Terms for Beginners
Before we begin, we should review a few important terms used in macrame.
This will help you understand the techniques more easily, follow patterns confidently, and set a strong foundation for your macrame journey.
- Knots: Macrame involves various knots, like the overhand knot and alternating overhand knot. Learning these basic knots is key to building a solid foundation. Check the "Macrame Knots You Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
- Cords: The primary material in macrame is cords made from cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. They come in different thicknesses and colors. You can learn more about macrame cords with our "Macrame ESSENTIALS: Everything You Need—Cord, Tools, & Materials" post.
- Loop: A loop is formed by crossing the cord over itself to create a ring-like shape. Loops are essential in many macrame designs.
- Fringe: The loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to your desired length. Want to learn more about fringe? Here's "My Top 5 Secrets for Creating PERFECTLY Styled Fringe" post you might find helpful.
- Anchor Cord: The fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached. It provides stability and support for your design.
- Working Cord: The cord that is actively manipulated to create knots and patterns throughout the project.
- Sennit: A series of knots grouped together to form a pattern or part of your macrame project.
- Frays and Tassels: The loose ends of your cords are often used intentionally as decorative elements like frays or tassels in your design.
Macrame Strap: Cords and Materials Needed
You'll need a few essential materials and supplies when creating this macrame strap pattern. This pattern only requires a 3mm macrame cord and swivel keyring.
Choosing Macrame Cord
For a macrame strap, opt for a soft, pliable cord like cotton or bamboo for comfort and ease of knotting.
A 3mm thickness offers the perfect balance of structure and manageability, while the color should complement your design.
For an eco-friendly option, consider cords made from recycled materials.
If you’re new to macrame, start with budget-friendly cords and experiment with different textures to find what works best for you.
Always choose a cord that fits your project’s purpose—whether decorative or functional—and reflects your personal style.
For this pattern, I’m using a 3mm single-strand cotton cord from our Rainbow Line in Natural color. Here’s why:
- 100% chemical-free and eco-friendly, made from recycled cotton materials
- Offers various sizes and vibrant color options
- Smooth, soft, and sturdy—perfect for knotting with ease
This cord is ideal for crafting a strap that’s both beautiful and durable.
