Essential Knots for Your Macrame Wall Hanging Plant Hanger

Before we dive in, let’s get familiar with the basic macrame knots you’ll use to make your plant hanger.

Each of these knots adds unique texture and function, forming the foundation of this and many other macrame projects.

Knots to Know:

  1. Lark’s Head Knot – A must-know mounting knot for securing cords to a dowel, ring, or frame.
  2. Half Hitch / Double Half Hitch Knot – Highly versatile and perfect for creating intricate patterns.
  3. Berry Knot – This decorative knot turns Square Knots into a berry-like shape, adding style and texture.
  4. Square Knot – A classic and widely used decorative knot, essential for various designs.
  5. Gathering Knot – Used as a finishing knot to neatly gather all cords together, often at the base of a design.
  6. Overhand Knot – A simple knot that prevents cord ends from fraying and is helpful for securing cords.

Pro Tip: These six macrame knots are the true building blocks of any macrame project. If you stick with these basics, you’ll have a solid foundation that won’t steer you wrong.

I always encourage new macrame artists to practice these knots frequently until they become second nature—like knowing the back of your hand!

When these knots feel intuitive, you’ll find it much easier to start creating your own patterns and experimenting with unique designs.

The beauty of macrame lies in its simplicity, and mastering these core knots allows you to unlock that potential.

With enough practice, you’ll develop the confidence to branch out, combining these basic knots in new ways to craft pieces that are entirely your own.

So, keep practicing, have patience, and watch as these foundational knots become the springboard for your creativity!

Important Macrame Terms for Beginners

Before we begin, we should review a few important terms used in macrame.

This will help you understand the techniques more easily, follow patterns confidently, and set a strong foundation for your macrame journey.

  • Knots: Macrame involves various knots, like the overhand knot and alternating overhand knot. Learning these basic knots is key to building a solid foundation. Check the "Macrame Knots You Need to Know" section for the knots used in this pattern.
  • Cords: The primary material in macrame is cords made from cotton, jute, nylon, or synthetic fibers. They come in different thicknesses and colors. You can learn more about macrame cords with our "Macrame ESSENTIALS: Everything You Need—Cord, Tools, & Materials" post.
  • Loop: A loop is formed by crossing the cord over itself to create a ring-like shape. Loops are essential in many macrame designs.
  • Fringe: The loose ends of cords that hang down, adding a decorative element. The fringe can be left as is or trimmed to your desired length. Want to learn more about fringe? Here's "My Top 5 Secrets for Creating PERFECTLY Styled Fringe" post you might find helpful.
  • Anchor Cord: The fixed cord or structure to which other cords are attached. It provides stability and support for your design.
  • Working Cord: The cord that is actively manipulated to create knots and patterns throughout the project.
  • Sennit: A series of knots grouped together to form a pattern or part of your macrame project.
  • Frays and Tassels: The loose ends of your cords are often used intentionally as decorative elements like frays or tassels in your design.

Macrame Plant Hanger Cord and Materials

Bochiknot macrame cord

To make this wall plant hanger, you’ll need 3mm macrame cord and a small ring—don’t worry, I’ll walk you through every step!

Let’s talk about the most important part: the cord. As beginners, you’ll want a cord that’s soft and easy to handle, but also sturdy enough to hold its shape.

There are so many options out there—cotton, jute, nylon—each with its own look and feel.

For the best results and to achieve the same look, I recommend using our 3mm single-strand Rainbow cord in natural—it’s exactly what we’ll be using for this plant hanger.

It’s my go-to for projects like this because it’s smooth, durable, and forgiving to work with.

Why I Love the Rainbow Cord:

  • It’s eco-friendly (made from 100% recycled cotton and completely chemical-free).
  • Comes in beautiful colors to fit any style.
  • Most importantly, it’s soft and smooth, so it’s perfect for beginners learning the ropes (literally!)

Other Supplies & Materials

To bring your macrame wall plant hanger to life, you’ll need a few additional supplies:

  • 3” Metal or Wooden ring: This ring will act as the sturdy base for your plant hanger, giving your macrame cords a stable attachment point to support the design and the plant’s weight. Either material—metal or wood—works well, so choose the one that best matches your style!

  • Small to Medium Plant Pot (4-7 inches): Select a pot that fits within the 4-7 inch range to ensure it sits comfortably within the hanger. This size works perfectly with the plant hanger’s structure, balancing nicely while allowing room for your plant to grow and flourish.

Having the right base and pot size helps create a beautiful, functional plant hanger that enhances your decor and makes your plant the star of the show!
